Bergen County 11-year-olds Trade Birthday Gifts for a Greater Cause

In a remarkable display of community citizenship, a group of 11-year-old boys from Demarest have proven that you’re never too young to make an impact. Rather than filling their rooms with the latest gadgets or toys during their January birthday season, these young leaders made a selfless choice: they asked their friends and families to donate to Bergen’s Promise in lieu of traditional gifts.

Service Over Self

At an age often defined by personal wish lists, these boys shifted their focus toward the well-being of youth across the county. Their decision reflects a deep sense of caring and a commitment to service that is an inspiration to us all. By choosing to support Bergen’s Promise, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to youth with emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges, they are directly contributing to the agency's mission of keeping "Healthy Families, Safe at Home". The group presented $2,105 that they collected from 25 friends and family. They donated to a special fund for unmet vision and dental needs. This special fund helps youth living with intellectual/developmental disabilities and complex medical needs obtain specialized vision and dental screenings, services and equipment they desperately need.

Empowering Others Through Awareness

Beyond the financial contribution, the boys and their families will now be able to help other families in need of support. They now know and can help raise awareness of the vital Wraparound Model of Care used by Bergen’s Promise. These supportive services have benefited approximately 15,000 youth/families in their homes and communities throughout the county since they opened in 2002.

A Model for Community Citizenship

This group of 11-year-olds has set a new standard for what it means to be a "good neighbor" in Bergen County. This inspiring act serves as a powerful reminder that the greatest gift one can receive is the opportunity to give back.
